Public Meeting
The Beginning
Wolverton in the 1880s was a town that existed for the LNWR Carriage works. The labour lived in railway houses on railway land and worked from 6AM in the railway works. The competitive types amongst the local population enjoyed outdoor sports in the daylight hours, events were organised and venues improvised.
The LNWR decided to provide a purpose made facility for their community to enjoy their sports. Seven and a half acres of land that was enclosed between the original railway route and a new bypass loop was allocated for the new recreation ground and a first class sporting facility was constructed.
The recreation ground was opened on 3rd August 1885 and was marked by festivities and celebration, the scale of which gives some idea of the value and importance of the new facility to the local people:
A procession of almost 5000 people and several marching bands made its way to the new recreation ground where a series of events including music, sports demonstrations and fireworks took place. In the evening the workshops were decked out and used to host parties and a ball in the evening. A gathering estimated at between 15,000 and 20,00 people assembled in Wolverton on that day (Wolverton 1881 Census pop: 3611).
